Dartmoor Hall, Cannington Campus – BREEAM Excellent

King Shaw Associates provided combined engineering services for Dartmoor Hall at Bridgwater College’s Cannington Campus. This new building provides much needed modern accommodation on the Cannington site suitable for student use during term time and for conference delegates at other times.
The building contains 25 en-suite bedrooms over two stories on the site of a former sports hall. Following studies carried out by our Building Services team, the installation of a large PV array on the south facing roof slope was carried out. The array along with a highly insulated and air tight fabric achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ with a score of 75%.
Gas condensing boilers provided for the heating via room radiators, which were chosen over underfloor heating due to floor build up restrictions.
From our Structural Engineering side the concept design of various forms of structure were researched in respect to their costs, speed of erection and acoustic performance. As the project procurement went down the design and build route the winning Contractor opted for traditional load bearing masonry construction with precast voided floors with gang nail trussed rafters for the roof. During construction the Contractor opted for timber stud walls above first floor which then required a strategy developed to deal with the overall building stability for the top floor by horizontal bracing. The roof structure was also designed to support the large PV array.
To comply with the Environmental Agencies requirements to attenuate stormwater run-off on site we developed a sustainable drainage system specifying the make-up areas under the carparks as temporary storage in conjunction with Swales set in the landscape.
