Furze Infants School, Chadwell Heath

King Shaw Associates were appointed as the Building Services Engineer for the construction of a new school hall, kitchen and classrooms as an extension to the existing school premises in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. The new classroom block, built from clay blocks and lime mortar features a roof top play space shielded by timber fins.

The new building is super insulated with engineered natural ventilation, whilst the structure has been exposed to increase thermal mass to enhance the night cooling strategy. A central thermal storage system provides for the heating requirements comprising solar thermal collectors on the roof backed up by condensing gas boilers. The new building is lit principally with daylight to minimise running costs, whilst the orientation and shading minimise overheating.

In addition to the new build, the project included the conversion of existing classrooms to form new reception classes.
