Mucknell Abbey, Worcester

King Shaw Associates provided the complete civil, structural, environmental and building services design for the reconstruction and extension of a listed grange farm as a new monastery for a Benedictine community.

The existing farm buildings were derelict and required extensive works to bring them up to modern standards for insulation and comfort to accommodate the refectory, guest house, administration, library and workshops. A new residential building and oratory were constructed to complete the accommodation.

The oratory features an arched timber glulam structure and stressed-skin timber roof. All the buildings feature extensive passive energy conservation measures including super insulation and passive solar design. A detailed environmental masterplan for the development led to the choice of biomass, wind and solar renewable energy systems.
