Springboard Centre, Bridgwater

King Shaw Associates provided the complete engineering and environmental design for the new Springboard Centre at Victoria Park in Bridgwater. The centre is a demonstration of both environmental and social sustainability, bringing together a wide range of community facilities in an attractive setting.

Developed as a pathfinder project for SWRDA and the local council, three linked buildings around a public courtyard house a surgery, pharmacy, community hall, Surestart centre, adult education facilities and offices and interview rooms for support services such as Citizens Advice, the local community police officers and the council housing services.

The low rise buildings marry both natural and high tech materials, from unfinished timber brise soleil and gravel roofs supporting native plants to standing seam zinc roofing, with solar thermal collectors and windcatchers. Internally the buildings are designed to maximise natural light and to minimise energy consumption with high levels of insulation and thermal mass for passive cooling coupled with highly efficient services installations.
