Symbiotic Tower, Riga, Latvia
King Shaw Associates provided outline engineering designs incorporating the employer’s requirements for this high-rise mixed commercial and residential development on the Daugava River in Riga, Latvia. The 26 storey tower would provide 10 storeys of commercial space with a further 12 storeys of luxury apartments. At lower ground, ground and first floor the design incorporated cafes, restaurants, a health club and shops with four storeys of underground parking below. The scheme will also create a new area of public river frontage on previously inaccessible land.
King Shaw Associates provided structural and building services engineering design for this project in conjunction with the architects, Schaller Architekten of Stuttgart. The vision was for the building to be an exemplar of low energy design and possibly the most sustainable in the former Soviet Baltic States; using high performance double facades, district heating and river water cooling to achieve this. We explored all these options with the architect, local engineer and utility companies.
King Shaw Associates used the latest computational programmes to ensure exact co-ordination of the complex 3-D form with Architecture and engineering. This enabled exportation directly into the analysis package, which had to allow for earthquake excitation of the form.
To deal with the risk of an earthquake and construction of 4 levels of basement beside the river we used specialists in these fields.
