The Blue School, Wells

The Blue School in Wells is the largest secondary school in Somerset and is a Specialist Science College. King Shaw Associates provided combined engineering services for the design and construction of their new Science Centre, which was opened by the Princess Royal in May 2006.

The building is a simple steel frame with the principal structural elements and the services exposed to help students to understand the form and function of the building. The building is principally naturally ventilated and lit with daylight to minimise running costs.

In keeping with its function as an educational building King Shaw Associates developed a solar photovoltaic brise soleil for the south facing elevations. This shades the classrooms to prevent overheating and generates electricity from the intercepted sunshine.
There is a large display electricity meter located in the refectory so that students are immediately aware of the benefit of the photovoltaic installation.

The contract was let on a design and build project with King Shaw Associates being novated structurally and retained by the client to monitor the final design of the M&E installations.
