The Circus Space, London

The Circus Space provides the only professional circus skills training in the UK, housed in a former power station in Hoxton, London. King Shaw Associates provided building services design for the construction of a new extension to house practice studios and workspaces and the refurbishment of the combustion chamber as the main practice and performance space.

Environmental control in the combustion chamber was particularly challenging, being over 16m in height. Performers can occupy almost the entire volume, often changing height rapidly and any sudden change in temperature could cause them to lose grip. King Shaw Associates had to find simple and efficient solutions to the heating system, suitable for an old building, which could maintain appropriate temperatures for the performers throughout the height without stratification.
