Wadham College, Oxford

King Shaw provided environmental and building services design of a new Graduate Centre for Wadham College. The new centre is located in a Grade II listed building, formally Blackwell’s Music Shop.

Open 24hours / day 7 days a week the building provides a variety of new facilities for the students.

The existing building was converted into a new library, kitchen, study area, seminar room, TV lounge and bar. A new tower incorporating a lift, seminar room provides a new entrance from within the college grounds to above ground and subterranean rooms.

The design of the services within the predominately earth bound structure required sensitive consideration and careful co-ordination of the existing internal structure. The solution was to utilise the thermal mass of the existing building wherever possible.

Organisation of the internal spaces ensured that the maximum amount of natural daylight could penetrate the building through the existing light well. Due to the limited space and restrictions of the listing the building services systems where incorporated into the design of the furniture to provide, on most part, an invisible installation. Heat recovery, occupancy detection and air quality sensors ensure that energy costs are kept to a minimum
